The Ford recall , announced Wednesday morning, centers on a faulty image processing module that can fail without warning, eliminating a key driver aid and creating a significant blind spot. This action follows a 16-month investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and represents one of the largest automotive technology-related recalls of the decade.
Owners of affected 2021-2024 model year Ford Explorer, Escape, Bronco Sport, and Maverick vehicles should expect official notification letters by mid-March. Scope and Cause of the Ford Rearview Camera Recall The core issue involves a supplier-provided video image processing module susceptible to moisture intrusion and thermal cycling stress.
According to documents filed with the NHTSA (Recall ID 26V-123), the module’s circuit board can develop micro-fractures over time. Consequently, the system either displays a blank screen, a frozen image, or flashes intermittently before failing completely.
Ford’s internal data, reviewed by safety regulators, shows a failure rate climbing sharply after three years of service or in regions with high humidity and temperature swings. “The loss of the rearview camera image increases the risk of a crash when the vehicle is in reverse,” states the official NHTSA recall report published February 25, 2026.
