BMW provides first look at electric 3-Series due in 2026

BMW's long-anticipated Neue Klasse electric vehicle family will finally debut this year with a compact crossover in the X3 lineup, likely badged iX3—the name previously used for a non-U.S. electric X3.

An electric 3-Series follows in 2026. On Wednesday, BMW shared social media images of prototypes undergoing cold-weather testing. This model will likely revive the i3 name, previously applied to an electric urban hatch globally and an electric 3-Series sold exclusively in China.

The next-generation 3-Series will offer both electric and combustion variants. Gas-powered prototypes have already been spotted testing.

The M3 will similarly offer dual powertrains. The electric M3 has also been caught testing, and BMW has hinted it may feature simulated engine sounds—at least within the cabin.

Neue Klasse EVs ride on a dedicated 800-volt platform, though their styling will echo gas-powered siblings. This is especially true for the 3-Series, whose electric and combustion models will appear nearly identical—reflecting the design language previewed in BMW's 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept.

Some Neue Klasse technologies will cross over to gas models, including a new interface that replaces the traditional gauge cluster with a panoramic head-up display spanning the windshield base.

BMW originally planned for the Neue Klasse platform to support hybrid configurations with gas engines, but that plan has been abandoned. The architecture will accommodate hydrogen fuel cells, however.

BMW considers the Neue Klasse introduction as pivotal as the original Neue Klasse platform of the 1960s—the foundation that defined the brand's sedan and coupe character to this day.
