The 2025 Formula 1 season exploded into life Sunday at Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit, delivering a rain-soaked thriller packed with drama, carnage, and a hard-fought victory for McLaren's Lando Norris.

Norris, last year's championship runner-up, held off a relentless Max Verstappen by just 0.895 seconds, while George Russell claimed third for Mercedes-Benz AMG, finishing over eight seconds adrift of the battling leaders.

Treacherous conditions shaped the narrative from the outset. The slick, rain-soaked surface claimed victims before the race even began: RB rookie Isack Hadjar crashed at Turn 1 on the formation lap, his F1 debut over before it started. Fellow newcomer Jack Doohan's home race lasted barely a lap before he slid into the barriers at Turn 6. Even veteran Carlos Sainz fell victim, spinning into the wall at the final corner under Safety Car conditions—a brutal start to his Williams tenure.

Norris launched from pole alongside teammate Oscar Piastri, but Verstappen seized the advantage off the line, pressuring the McLaren pair immediately. The early incidents triggered a Safety Car period lasting through lap seven. At the restart, Norris defended his lead against Verstappen, with Piastri third, Russell fourth, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fifth.

Mid-race brought improving conditions and a rush to slick tires. Then the rain returned, catching both McLarens off guard—both drivers briefly slid onto the grass. Norris recovered and pitted; Piastri lost significant ground. Verstappen briefly inherited the lead on worn slicks before pitting, returning the advantage to Norris.

A final Safety Car, triggered by crashes involving Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto and Red Bull's Liam Lawson, set up a dramatic finish. Verstappen attacked relentlessly in the closing laps, but Norris defended with composure to take the checkered flag. Their duel allowed Russell to close up and secure the final podium spot. Behind him, rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli delivered an impressive fourth-place finish after a post-race appeal overturned an unsafe pit release penalty.

Ferrari's season began in frustration. Lewis Hamilton's much-anticipated Scuderia debut yielded only 10th place after qualifying eighth. Leclerc finished eighth. Both drivers gambled on staying out during the rain, hoping for a weather break that never came—a strategic misfire that left them mired in traffic.

Norris now leads the 2025 Drivers' Championship with 25 points, ahead of Verstappen (18) and Russell (15). McLaren and Mercedes share the Constructors' lead with 27 points each, with Red Bull third on 18. The circus moves to Shanghai for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.
